Around the same time crowd violence began to erupt inside the ground between the two sets of fans.

Objects were reportedly thrown between two sections, before fighting ensued.

The scene was described as “absolute bedlam” amid concerns of the game going ahead.

Journalist Daniel Storey tweeted: “Think that there has to be a greater than zero chance of this game being postponed if the deluge continues.

“Work ongoing to try and sweep pouring water from stadium corners down drains that have been opened for the purpose, but it’s Sisyphean sogginess.”

Riot police eventually re-established control of the situation just over one hour before kick-off.

There were initially concerns the game may not go ahead on time, but those fears did not materialise.

Turkey-Georgia is the penultimate match of the first round of group-stage matches at the Euros.
